Ålesund, the largest town on Norway’s northwest coast (40.000 inhabitants), is built on several islands stretching out into the ocean within the beautiful surroundings of fjords and the high peaks of the Sunnmore Alps. A large part of the town was destroyed by fire in 1904 and rebuilt in the ‘Art Nouveau’ style which was the typical architecture of the time style with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments.
Today it is a bustling town where the fish and furniture industry are the main sources of income.
It is not without reason that Ålesund was voted the most beautiful town in Norway by the Norwegian people in 2007 and the newspaper The Times in 2009. It is easy to become fascinated by Ålesund.
