Molde, beautifully situated at the Romsdalsfjord, is known as the City of Jazz and for over 100 years as the City of Roses. The statue of the Rose Maiden in front of the city hall, is one of the city's well-known symbols. For you, the Rose Maiden comes alive and goes on a journey of discovery with you.
The tour starts passing the square in Molde and we then walk up to Molde Cathedral. The church in Gothic style was opened in 1957 . In summertime you may see the beautiful roses and other flowers on the roof of city hall. The walk then continues via Vektergata over to the Culture Square and up Gørvelalleen to the Romsdalsmuseet. Here it is a little climb, but nice paved road.
We will walk towards an interesting historical part of Molde, the Royal Birch and and the Peace Grove. The place where Crown Prince Haakon and King Olav sought shelter from German bombers in April 1940 when they were being hunted by the Germans. The Peace Grove next to the Royal Birch was founded by Knut Ødegård, president of the Bjørnson Festival in 1997. It symbolises the continuing struggle for freedom, peace and human dignity both today and in the future.
Afterwards we walk down the so called green corridor with the Rekneshaugen viewpoint. The green corridor runs from the sea at Reknes to the Chateau (Baroque villa), continuing through the Reknes Park up to the ”Pavillion” at the viewpoint.
In addition to the charm of old wooden houses that have survived despite the eventful history, you will see as well the modern part of Molde with the large football stadium and the landmark Scandic Sail Hotel.
Did you know that Molde was once briefly the capital of Norway? This and much more will be explained during the tour, the Rose Maiden lets you share in the idiosyncrasies of daily life. Be inspired by the enthusiasm for Norway and the city of roses.
Experiencing Molde with all you senses and with your heart is the main aim of the Rose Maiden.
